Wireless Technology

The Texasdata network is a "fixed wireless" network using a microwave platform developed by Motorola specifically for Wireless Internet Service Providers called Canopy. In simple terms, we use a series of towers linked by radio signals to provide service to customers. Each customer has a radio that sends data to/from a local tower (see Installation), which then relays that data to/from our Internet interface. The data is secure in transit, meaning that prying eyes can't see what you or anyone else is doing. The unit itself is small (approx. 12"x4"x2") and we sometimes add a specialized dish to improve reception. This is a proven, off-the shelf, readily available system developed specifically for ISP use by Motorola. Unlike some of our competitors that use equipment built by a small company you've never heard of or using technology that was designed years ago and never upgraded, we are using standard, readily available equipment from a reliable and well known manufacturer with technical support and an outstanding history of quality products.

The radios we use utilize the unlicensed radio bands of 900mhz, 2.4Ghz and 5.2 to 5.8 Ghz. Because of the proximity of our links and the design of our network, our network is fast and capable of delivering ultra high bandwidth. Unlike satellite, our service is not interrupted by the weather. And unlike most other providers, our service is symmetrical, meaning that your download speed and your upload speeds are typically the same. Other providers typically limit your upload speed. This makes a difference when emailing pictures to your friends and family, working on a web site or working with your company's network while at home. Due to the high utilization of bandwidth that VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) needs we do not typically allow services like Vonage on our system. Exceptions can be made but please check with us before connecting such an appliance.
